In this seminar, the environmental historian Dr Catherine Knight will present a history of the commons, their enclosure, and their near invisibility in the social and geographical landscape of colonial New Zealand. She will explore how the ethos of commons could be applied to the way we view land and other resources in society today, helping to shape a more just, equitable, and regenerative economy.

Her book An Uncommon Land, published with Totara Press, tackles historical narratives of “enclosure, dispossession, colonisation and – ultimately – hope for a better future,” and what these mean for society and landscapes in Aotearoa New Zealand.
